I believe in the transformative powers of entrepreneurship. And I believe that entrepreneurs seeking profit and fame are creating a better world of limitless possibilities. Just look around us for compelling examples.
It was at NYU Stern, my Alma mater, where I founded the Stewart Satter Program in Social Entrepreneurship, and was first introduced to City Light Capital. Josh and Matt were asked to be final judges at the annual Social Entrepreneurship Business Plan competition. They both impressed me. They asked tough questions. They drilled down on important areas of inquiry from each team competing for the $100,000 prize. They asked the kind of questions that I wished I heard more of.
Ultimately, I invested, became an advisor and now have become a partner of City Light Capital. I have confidence in the team, the strategy and the model. And the more time I spend with our portfolio companies, the more impressed I have become.
The safety and education portfolio companies we invest in and help to grow at City Light reflect what I know, what I believe in and how I want to spend a portion of my time and money…because there is nothing more exciting to me than to partner with innovative companies trying to improve the world around us.
Stewart A. Satter is Partner at City Light Capital. Outside of his role at City Light, Stewart was the President & CEO of Consumer Testing Laboratories, a group of independent, internationally recognized product testing laboratories.
After spending 4 years overseas establishing the Company’s Hong Kong and Taiwan testing facilities, Mr. Satter purchased the Company from his family in 1988. Stewart then led the growth of CTL from 40 employees to almost 1,000 worldwide, establishing testing facilities in USA, Canada, Hong Kong, China, Bangladesh, India, Mexico City, Taiwan and Singapore.
In October 2016, Consumer Testing Laboratories was sold to Underwriters Laboratories. This transaction was handled by Citibank.
Mr. Satter was interested in entrepreneurship at a very early age. To share his passion with future entrepreneurs, Stewart donated the seed money for the Stewart Satter Program in Entrepreneurship at NYU Stern. This program was developed to encourage the innovation in higher education and in student ventures that pursue the “double bottom line” of profitability and social impact.
Stewart became a partner at City Light Capital to apply his entrepreneurial skills and to be a part of an innovative fund that is a leader in impact investing.
Mr. Satter was a member of the NYU Stern Board of Overseers and a 2005 recipient of the NYU Stern Nichols Award, in recognition for his integrity, enterprise, and service to the community. Stewart received his MBA in Finance from NYU Stern. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
Mr. Satter lives in the Palm Beach, Florida area where he leads a real estate development firm, Carnegie Hill Development.
